Combo Chart Visual |
The Combo chart is your most basic chart type in Analytics. It allows you to create the following charts:
- Vertical bar chart
- Horizontal bar chart
- Line chart
- Line with point chart
- Area chart
- Area with point chart
- Scatter plot chart, and
- Combination chart
You need to connect a data source to create a combo chart. At this time, only one data source is allowed per chart.
Steps to Create a Combo Chart
- Navigate to Analytics -> Visuals.
- Click on New Visual button.
- Select Combo Chart type.
- Name your visual by replacing the 'Untitled Visual' with your (internal) visual name, this will make it easier for you to find it later. Tab or click anywhere outside the box to save your changes.
- Next, link your data source by clicking on +Add Data Source. It will bring up a list of data sources. To select the data source you want to use to create your visual, click on the row.
- By default, Envisio automatically creates a basic bar chart using the first column of the data source for the Y-axis and the second column for the Series.
To change the chart configuration such as adding another series, changing the chart type or adding threshold, explore the options below.
- Chart Properties
- Series: Data Source and Properties
- X Axis: Data Source and Properties
- Y Axis: Properties
- Adding Threshold
Chart Properties
Chart Properties contain options that affect the overall appearance of the chart. To access Chart Properties, click on the chart type. Let's take a look at the properties related to Combo Chart:
The details of Visual Title, Additional Information, and Enable Plans Linking options can be found in the Basics of Working with Visuals.
Show Legend
By default, the legend displays below the chart. You can turn off the legend display by toggling this option off.
Inverse Axis
Use this option to swap the x and y-axis. Best used for turning a vertical bar chart to a horizontal bar chart.
Add Series, Add Y Axis, and Add Threshold
You can add Series, Y Axis and Threshold with these buttons on the Chart Properties. Alternatively, you can click on the three dots to the right of the chart type:
Series: Data Source and Properties
By default, the second column of your data source is used as the first Series when creating your chart. To point your series to a different column, click on the Series, which opens up the Data Source and Properties section. In the Data Source tab, choose the desired data source column in the Selected Column drop-down. You will also be able to review the source data here.
In the Series' Properties tab, the available options are:
Series Label
By default, the Series Label uses the selected column name. You can change it to a more meaningful name. This is only for internal reference. You can also change the color of the series using the color picker to the right.
Chart Type
Choose between Bar (Default) and Line.
Stack Bars
This option is displayed when you have more than one series. It allows you to turn your vertical bar chart into a stacked bar chart.
Use Y Axis
When you have more than one Y Axis defined, you can point your series to use the desired Y Axis.
Show Values on Chart
Use this option to display data point values above the bar or point.
Enable Tooltip Comments
Used with the Select Comments Column below, this option is used to display text as a tooltip when the viewer hovers over the data point. This is useful to provide additional information about the data.
Select Comments Column
With the Enable Tooltip Comments option toggled on, choose a TEXT, LONG TEXT, or PICKLIST type column from your data source that contains the comment you'd like to display to the viewer when they hover over the data point.
X Axis: Data Source and Properties
By default, the first column of your data source is used as the X Axis when creating your chart. You can use a different column for your X Axis by clicking on the X Axis, then clicking on the Data Source tab, and selecting the desired data source column in the Selected Column drop-down.
In the X Axis' Properties tab, the available options are:
X Axis Label
By default, the X Axis Label uses the selected column name. You can change it to a more meaningful name.
Show Title
By default, Show Title is enabled. It displays the X Axis Label between the chart and the legend.
Sort Order
You can sort the order of X Axis and thus affecting how it is displayed on the chart by using 'Default' (Display the values as is), 'Ascending', 'Descending', 'Day' or 'Month'.
Index Offset
Use this option to offset the starting position on the X Axis using an index. The index is the data point position on the X Axis ranging from 1 to n. Setting an index offset shifts the data points to the left. This is useful if you would like to display your data in a fiscal date order rather than a calendar date order.
Show Grid Lines
Use this option to display vertical grid lines on your chart.
Date Aggregation
This option is only available when using a DATE type column. It allows you to group and summarize the data with intervals of 'Day', 'Week', 'Month', 'Quarter', 'Year', 'Fiscal Quarter', 'Fiscal Year' or 'Hour', using the functions:
- SUM
- AVERAGE
- MIN
- MAX
- COUNT
- SECOND LAST - Second last value in the aggregated data set
- LAST - Last value in the aggregated data set
Y Axis: Properties
By default, the Y Axis uses the data from the first Series. If you have more than one Series, you can add Y Axis.
In the Y Axis' Properties tab, the available options are:
Y Axis Label
By default, the Y Axis Label uses the Series' column name. You can change it to a more meaningful name.
Show Title
By default, Show Title is enabled. The Y Axis Label displays to the left of the chart according to the Axis Position option.
Show Grid Lines
Use this option to display horizontal grid lines on your chart. This is enabled by default.
Axis Position
This option controls the display position of the label.
Min/Max Value
To customize the scale of your Y Axis, you can set a Min/Max Value. We will use the best effort when charting using these custom settings.
Adding Threshold
Threshold lines or bands can be useful in highlighting specific values on a chart for better visualization or to compare data. Thresholds can be added horizontally or vertically on the X or Y axis of a chart. Threshold is only available in Combo Chart.
As an example, we can use a threshold line to highlight where revenue targets are met or we can use a dynamic threshold to compare the sum or average value, or reference to another column.
In the example above, a threshold is set up to highlight the periods where Revenue meets or exceeds the target of $80,000,000. Let's take a look at how to set it up:
Steps to Add a Threshold
Pre-requisite: Set up your combo chart first.
- With the Combo chart open, click on the three dots to the right of the Combo Chart label.
- Select Add Threshold.
- By default, Thresholds are added using the Average of the Series' values. If you're looking for an average threshold, you are done.
Read on to set up a constant or dynamic value threshold.
Threshold Label and Show Label
This represents the name of the threshold but if the Show Label option is enabled, it will also display the label on the chart above the threshold line.
Threshold Method
You can set up your threshold using Per Table or Per Series. Both options yield the same result when there is only one series. But when there is more than one series, you can choose how to apply your threshold.
Per Table: Threshold will apply to all the values in the entire table.
Per Series: Threshold will apply per the series you define. This is helpful if you have multiple series and you want to display an average for each band, as in the example below:
For a walkthrough on how to add a target line and change the color of the bars to denote whether or not you have met your desired target see here:
Threshold Type
There are two threshold type, Line or Band. Like the name suggests, one draws a line based on the Threshold Summary (Constant, Min, Max, Average or Reference) and the other allows you to define a range of values based on the Series defined.
Use Series
The Use Series field is only available when you select the Per Series method. This enables you to define which Series to apply your threshold.
Threshold Summary
Select the function to apply the threshold from the Threshold Summary dropdown. You can add dynamic functions such as Constant, Min, Max, Average or Reference a different column on the same axis.
If you're seeing more decimals than desired when using the Threshold summary of 'Average', check the Series' column formatting. Changing the rounding option on the column used for the Series will help.
Threshold Show Line
You can use this option to show/hide the threshold line.
Show Value
When defining a per table threshold, the Show Value option allows you to display the threshold value on the chart.
Threshold Color
You can set the threshold color using the color picker.
Threshold Fill
Optionally you can choose to highlight the chart where the conditions are met with the threshold color.
